The Papa!

Something I have loved since I can remember is a classic: Les Miserables!

Got that from mah padre :)

When I was little, we'd watch the musical together.
Later on, he told me how wonderful the book is (despite it's gigantism),
so I fell in love with that next.

So yeah. Pretty much love all things Les Mis.

Which is a good representation of what I think about my dad:
he inspires me!

He thinks a lot. I like thinking with him.

He works particularly hard--not sure I could ever work as hard as him!

He is a very sweet, sincere, man.

Something that particularly impacts my life is that I was raised in a household where I was born to fly! Whatever I wanted to do in life, I knew I could live my own life.  I love my family SO MUCH (and would love to see them a whole ton more); I also have personal dreams--to pursue, trip over, and achieve.

Great guy. I hope I can be more like him someday. Someday :)

Happy Father's day!

Pretty

Hmm hmm hmm. I can't decide if I actually want to write this post. I may go back and rewrite it.
Well..here goes!

So the other day I was lucky enough to get ahold of a lost journal from a year ago (YAY!). I flipped through it, smiled a little at all of my worries and excitements, and paused at one entry. It was me thinking about a time back in middle school when I was riding the school bus:

"Most mornings I sat next to a girl (who was older, she was in high school, whoa! haha!) whose family had just moved into the neighborhood....She was telling me a story about her mom, then stopped and asked, 'Would you like to see a picture?' She pulled out her cell phone and showed me a picture.
I honestly didn't mean to, but when I saw that picture I drew back, shocked. The girl wasn't very attractive, but her mom was ugly.

The girl laughed at my reaction and said, "Yep. She's scary-looking, huh?' Then she continued her story after I, embarrassed, protested [her statement].

Ugliness is such a strange idea.

I hate society's expectation of/value of beauty, yet I know I'm all wrapped up in it too. I wish [list of things I wished were different about how I look].
I was [taken aback] back the picture of that girls' mom....

We have to get past looks, good or bad, to see through to personality. To see the person behind the face or body.

It is weird that something, supposedly so insignificant [in the long run], like looks, could ever have become so important.

I wish it weren't.

And yet, here I am. Wishing I was prettier. Wondering why I care."

Reading that entry, by a slightly younger me, made me stop for a moment.
I realized how some of my ideas about beauty have changed, since I wrote this entry, and since I was sitting on that school bus.

(That is the point of me writing this post. Not to explore a personal journey through insecurity and bring pity haha. But to follow a thought about beauty and what that means!)

So many times, I've found myself wishing I could make others understand how important and lovely they were; they didn't need to be intimidated by anyone else.

Then I'd turn around and silently hate myself for some aspect of my own physical appearance.
Not obsessively. Just little digs.

Weird, huh??

One of my breakthroughs came at a political summer camp called Girl's State. There were thousands of girls there. There were gorgeous women all around.
That was a bit intimidating to me. But then I noticed something: that girl over there is gorgeous, and so is that girl over here. Yet, they look nothing like each other.

Epiphany: there are so many kinds of beautiful!

I am not perfect at loving myself now, but even with the leaps and bounds I have made, I feel so much happier! Which leads me to a nice little tangent haha:

Just because you would like to change something doesn't mean you have to hate where you are currently at.

That seems a little backwards, eh? Cuz if you didn't dislike the status of the current situation, what would motivate you to work at changing it?
Make sure you know where you are directing the discontent or hate!

Don't settle for staying stuck in conditions you dislike, but come to terms with yourself in the meantime.

If you are failing at something, it is ok to be uncomfortable or frustrated with that. But stop wasting time getting frustrated at yourself, and work to change whatever is wrong!

(Not to keep adding disclaimers to anything, but I also don't mean that we should always be trying to change our body. Realize what is important, what matters. Like health. Work towards that. Other things like feeling good and confident come too.)

You've probably heard this before, but a talk with a friend once really drove this point home:
If you don't like something, change it.
If you can't change it, don't worry about it.
If you can change it, then there is no need to worry, rather, a need to work.

Easier said than done in a lot of circumstances, I know. But it is an attitude that makes life a lot less stressful!

Unexpected

Couple things on my mind :)

First,
curveballs!

Life is full of em! Wow...I don't know why I just used a baseball analogy...I really know nothing about the sport ha.
Hmmm :) :) :)

There is something intriguing about the happy unexpected.
Or the expected things you fear won't happen that do :)
I could say I've had a few of those lately, but that would probably be redundant since they happen to everyone.

I don't have anything profound to expound about on this thought.
But life is good!

Second,
You've probably heard this Robert Frost quote:
"In three words I can sum up everything I've learned about life:
It goes on."

Isn't that odd sometimes?

You're at a soccer game and some athlete gets hauled off in an ambulance. Moments of respect, perhaps. Then the game begins again.

You're working at a care center when an individual dies unexpectedly. Then you put on a smile and help everybody else with their daily routine.

You make great friends, then you move and start making new ones.

Something happens that rocks your life (in a good or bad way), and you have to shrug aside the strange feeling of continuing to do ordinary things.

Do you ever think, "Whoa, life! Don't you realize what just happened??"

Sorta makes you pause. Wonder if it is right or decent to move forward. It can almost feel insensitive to keep going.

But you can't stop living because of the surrealism of the unexpected.
The ordinary parts of life must continue to happen.

And in many (slash most!) cases, I don't think that living diminishes the importance of the big changes.

Feeling guilty for moving forward doesn't help change what happened.

That being said, there is a time for all seasons.

I hear that read at many funerals in movies:

"To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven:
A time to be born, and a time to die...
a time to break down, and a time to build up;
A time to weep, and a time to laugh;
a time to mourn, and a time to dance..."
(Ecclesiastes 3)

Those "times" can overlap. Just cuz you are laughing, doesn't mean you are completely done weeping. Reflecting back on people or times, or feeling a refreshed sense of sadness at something, doesn't mean you haven't moved on.

Some hurts will always sting a little.
(A Skillet song asks, "Do you believe that time heals all wounds?"
In general, I do.)

Pausing to acknowledge and mourn when something bad happens is not bad--heck, it is probably healthy!

But if you have cause to mourn, don't forget to keep dancing!!!

Weakest Link

I just heard an inspirational message about the power of one.

The phrase "a chain is only as strong as its weakest link" was used several times.

Implying that if you are not strong, you are endangering the chain.

....

Yeah......
I agree.

Sorta.

In many cases, I do think that teams are as strong as their individual members.

But I also believe that people are a lot different than little twists of metal. We aren't so cut-and-dry weak or strong. We are alive! Changeable! Weakness has the potential for strength.

"Lean on me when you're not strong." Anyone heard those words, or seen them?

We all have different weaknesses. Good friendships or relationships or whateverships (pirateships?) can combine strengths.

It isn't "I'm strong at this and you are weak at this, so our chain is broken."

We all need to do our part in teams or relationships, but ... hmmm.

As I thought about this, look what good ol' King James popped out at me:

"Two are better than one;
because they have a good reward for their labour.

For if they fall, the one will lift up his fellow:
but wo to him that is alone when he falleth;
for he hath not another to help him up."

(Ecclesiastes 4:9-10)

People can help each other out :)

Jack Johnson popped into my head at that last thought.
"Better together."

Castles in the Sky

"Do you ever question your life?"

That line is from the song Castles in the Sky. Tis stuck in my head ha.

Not in an emo way, just in a thoughtful way.

Does life ever seem surreal to you? Like you've taken a step back and you are seeing everything going on around you as if it is a dream or a movie?

I've had those moments come quite a bit lately.

Ha! When I was little, I'd sometimes imagine we were all just characters in some magic book, with someone, somewhere, flipping through slowly.
We just lived out our story on the pages of earth with no true reality.
Funny to think back on :)

Well, now I know this life has a lot more significance than a storybook. Now when moments come that sort of ..detach me from the present I guess..  it is good time for reflection.

Reflections on things like:
Is what I'm doing important?
Is what I'm doing positive?
C/Should I have done something different?
C/Should I be doing more?

(Whoa. I just realized could and should are spelled quite strangely. I had to stare at them for a few seconds.)

I like my life. And I like those moments that come that make me pause.

Dotted Lines

Ya know those times when you get little glimpses of life within little parts of life?
Tonight, whilst driving the construction-laden freeway, I started thinkin.

Remember back when you learned to drive? They said that you, to stay on course, don't stare at the road directly in front of the car. Look out into the distant road and you'll automatically adjust your path to stay where you should be.

Seeing the analogy that formed in my mind?

Looking at the big picture will keep us moving forward. Getting caught up in the details of what is going on in the present or immediate future will just get you swerving all over the place. Doesn't mean you stop enjoying right where you are. You just don't stare at it quite so hard ha.

Shrug. Maybe it isn't a perfect analogy. Maybe it isn't even a good one. But right now, I think it would help me if I considered following that logic.

Walk Like a Man

Ha! For some reason this poem is both inspiring and really hilarious to me.

Do You Fear the Wind?
Halmin Garland

Do you fear the force of the wind,
The slash of the rain?
Go face them and fight them,
Be savage again.
Go hungry and cold like the wolf.
Go wade like the crane.
The palms of your hands will thicken.
The skin of your cheek will tan.
You'll grow ragged and weary and swarthy.
But you'll walk like a man!

:)
